Pelvic floor physiotherapy is a well-established, evidence-based, specialised service that is effective as a first line of defence against incontinence and pelvic pain. The pelvic floor muscles are a group of muscles that attach to the pelvic bone and sacrum on the front, back, and sides. They support the bladder, uterus, prostate, and rectum like a sling. They also encircle the urethra, rectum, and vagina (in women). In order to maintain continence and allow for urination, bowel movements, and, in women, sexual intercourse, these muscles must be able to contract and relax appropriately. When these muscles are becoming excessively strained (hypertonic), they frequently cause pelvic pain, urgency, and frequency of the bladder and bowels. When they are low-key (hypotonic).
Our Pelvic health physiotherapists are specially trained to assess and treat a wide range of pelvic floor problems in women, men and children such as incontinence, organ prolapse, painful sexual intercourse, bedwetting and pelvic pain.
